Toxicity, Emissions and Structural Damage from Lithium-Ion Battery Thermal Runaway

Toxicity, emissions and structural damage results on lithium-ion battery (LIB) thermal runaway triggered by the electrothermal method were performed in this work. The triggering was determined to study behaviors of three types commercial LIBs. cathode material batteries after observed scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission (TEM) X-ray diffraction (XRD). It found that as state charge (SOC) increases, lower temperature at which occurs, more badly electrode runaway. Qualitative analysis products from LIBs conducted GC-MS, toxicity formation mechanism analyzed detail. Dozens toxic substances detected using LixNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 LiCoO2 material, increase gradually with SOC, while for LiFePO4 most 30% SOC.
